The thesis entitled Studies towards Process Research and Development of few Biologically Active Compounds Containing Dihydropyridine and Purine Nitrogen Heterocycles is divided into five chapters. The title of the thesis clearly reflects the objective, which is to interface with synthetic organic chemistry to study various aspects of process research and development of Biologically Active compounds containing Dihydropyridine and Purine Nitrogen heterocycles in order to derive a non-infringing, economical, safe, environmental friendly and robust process which shall comply with regulatory requirements. Nitrogen heterocycles are extremely important structural motifs responsible for eliciting various biological activities in natural products and synthetic medicines. This has attracted the medicinal chemists towards the synthesis of various compounds having nitrogen heterocycles as useful medicines to treat various diseases. It is evident by the fact that, a large number of marketed pharmaceutical products possess nitrogen heterocycles. Owing to ever-increasing demand of medicines in all the disease segments, the synthetic strategies amalgamated with excellent process research and development program adopted for the synthesis, dictates the availability of medicines at affordable price to the patient population. The process research and development in pharmaceutical industry is focused mainly to develop a pharmaceutical process which is efficient, economic, safe, scalable, environment friendly, rugged and robust to beat the competition and to meet the need of the sufferer. This dissertation is primarily devoted towards studies on process research and development of few biologically and commercially important active pharmaceutical ingredients containing dihydropyridine and purine nitrogen heterocycles. First chapter deals with a brief introduction to Pharmaceutical process chemistry. Second Chapter describes a one-pot process for the synthesis of an anti-hypertensive drug Lacidipine (dihydropyridine derivative).en_US
