The isolation of lipolytic strains of microorganisms from industrial effluents has utility in biodegradation and bioremediation The biofilm formed by lipase secreting organisms can be used for the degradation of fats and oils since lipids are an important component in wastewaters are serious threats to the environment Lipids form oil films on water surfaces preventing the newlinediffusion of oxygen from air into water leading to the loss of many forms of aquatic species The addition of lipase to lipid rich wastewater before it is released into the environment may help in abating pollution Lipases are hydrolytic enzymes which hydrolyze triglycerides to free fatty acids and glycerol These enzymes also catalyze transesterification aminolysis and acidolysis reactions Their potential to function in nonaqueous and micro aqueous environments makes them versatile catalysts Lipases are ubiquitous in nature and those from microbes have occupied a prominent position as industrial biocatalysts newlineen_US
