The recent developments and an extensive growth of applications viz Internet based servers interactive television video conferencing etc require large volume of multidimensional data stored in large disk storage systems available in a data centre It is necessary to maintain thousands of rotating disks for fast online access of stored datasets at these data centre Power consumption is becoming a rising concern for these kinds of large disk storage systems Currently it is estimated that the disk storage systems consume around 35 percent of the total power used in a data centre The reason for power consumption in the disk storage systems is a frequent change in the disk access patterns and continuous increase in the clock frequencies Disk power management techniques are based on either hardware or software In hardware based approach power consumption is reduced by adopting the architectural mechanisms such as spinning down idle disks or rotating disks with reduced speed when some amount of latency can be tolerated In software based approach compiler reduces the power consumption by restructuring the code considering the best advantage of available low power abilities offered by the disk newlinestorage system newline newlineen_US
