Genetic Diversity of Sechium edule Grown in India

Abstract

The analysis of genetic relationships in crop species is an important tool for crop newlineimprovement as it provides information about its genetic diversity, an essential part of newlinenature. Populations with adaptive plasticity is provided, allowing them to undergo genetic newlinechanges in response to fluctuations in the environment. Natural selection is ineffective without genetic variations. Selection is one of the best known processes to affect the genetic variability and it newlinehelps the populations to adapt better to their environment. The differences in the fitness newlineand survival among the individuals with the genetic base for such differences are the causes for the natural selection to occur. Epigentic activities like gene silencing or alterations in the chromatin structure newlineand variations in the genome sequence across a crop species is known as Plant genetic newlinediversity. This is advantageuos to the crop breeders by choosing the most favorable traits newlinesince they need the variations in their breeding programmes to achieve their goal to provide a superior variety. Characterization of genetic resources within populations is pivotal for newlineconservation and exploitation of the same for the crop improvement methods.the main objective of this research is to collect Sechium edule landraces from different growing locations across India and To generate and maintain the DNA bank of the divergent landraces. newline
