dc.description.abstract | The current investigation revealed the presence of more number of secondary metabolites (Phenols, alkaloids, flavonoids, tannins, cardioglycosids, saponins, steroids and terpinoids) in ethanolic extract of Erythrina variegata L. leaf and flower followed by bark extract. It was also confirmed by HPTLC finger printing analysis. The flower and leaf extract was found to have good in vitro free radical scavenging ability and in vitro inhibit ion of enzymes like and#945;-amylase and and#945;- glucosidase. The results indicated that the ethanolic extract of Erythrina variegata L. flower shows more phytoconstituents and inhibitory activity than the leaf. So, it was selected for further investigation. Further, GC-MS analysis revealed the presence of 30 compounds and LC-MS showed the presence of 24 compounds in the ethanolic extract of Erythrina variegata L. flowers. Acute toxicity studies indicate that oral administration of the ethanolic flower extract of Erythrina variegata L. was found to safe upto 2000mg/kg b.wt since there was no mortality and behavioral changes in experimental animals treated for a period of 14 days. The results were also supported by analyzing the biochemical parameters and histopathology analysis. The dose, 200mg/kg b.wt of ethanolic extract of Erythrina variegata L. flower was chosen as the effective glycemic control dose when compared to other doses 400, 600mg/kg b.wt through GTT in STZ induced diabet ic rats. newlineThe antidiabetic activity of Erythrina variegata L. flower was studied in Streptozotocin induced diabetic rats. After the induction of diabetes by Streptozotocin glucose, insulin, c-peptide, HbA1c levels, hepatic markers (SGOT and SGPT) and renal markers (urea, uric acid and creatinine), lipid profiles in plasma and hematological parameters were significantly increased and HDL level was decreased when compared with the control. Increased level of lipid peroxidation, decreased glycogen content, altered antioxidant enzyme and carbohydrate metabolizing enzymes of liver and kidney were also noted in diab | |
