Socio Cognitive Correlates of Depression among Adolescents

Abstract

The aim of the present study was to examine the relative contribution of self-blame, rumination, catastrophizing, negative cognitive style and perceived social support in determining depression among late adolescents. The sample for this study consisted of 300 late adolescents (150 boys and 150 girls) with depression, selected from different schools and colleges of Agra and Jhansi district. The age range of the sample was 16-18 years. Cognitive Emotion Regulation Questionnaire (Garnefski, Kraaij and Spinhoven, 2002) was used for measuring self-blame, rumination, and catastrophizing. Negative cognitive style, Perceived social support and Depression were measured by Cognitive Style Questionnaire (Haeffel et. al., 2008), Multidimensional Scale of Perceived Social Support (Zimet, Dahlem, Zimet, and Farley, 1988) and Beck Depression Inventory - II (Beck, Steer, and Brown, 1996) respectively.
