Production based scheduling method for linear construction in road projects

Abstract

Construction industry plays a major role in the economic development of a nation Trade and commerce in any country have always depended on the construction industry to deliver the infrastructure facilities promptly Although every aspect in construction industry is significant planning and scheduling of construction projects is a critical aspect which can determine the status of the project well in advance Appropriate and in depth planning of construction projects is mandatory if delays in execution are to be avoided Roads and highways are important components of infrastructure for any nation They help in transportation of men and material across the length and breadth as and when required Planning and scheduling of highway construction projects have been traditionally done with Bar charts Critical path method CPM based on time allocated for its activities For projects such as highways these methods do not give realistic information and have been found to be inadequate for scheduling due to the nature of relationship of its activities and execution style These types of projects are called linear projects which typically consist of activities that span the entire length of the project with consecutive activities progressing at the same time maintaining a buffer time and distance between each other
