Design and Development of the Model to Transliterate Digitalized Multilingual Text into Braille and Speech An Aid for Visually Impaired People

Abstract

The present epoch has witnessed many research and enhancements newlinein the field of ICT. But the benefits of these researches and technological newlinedevelopment are not fully reached to the physically challenged people with newlinevisual impairment up to large extend as they are able to read text written newlinein Braille script. If literatures are made available in audio form in their newlinenative language then also it becomes helpful to them. Due to limited newlineamount of literature availability in Braille script or in audio, blind people newlineare not able to achieve knowledge as sighted people. Like sighted people, newlineblind people are unable to cope up with the current trends and be up-tothe- newlinedate with the current news as news and information related to current newlineaffairs are not available in Braille or in audio. newlineSo from the observation by the researcher and conversation with newlinevisually impaired people, researcher found that due to inadequate amount newlineof resources, particularly literatures in Braille script or in audio, they are newlineusually away from main stream of the society. So there is a need to develop newlineapplications to overcome limitations of resources for visually impaired newlinepeople. newlineThe primary objective of the research work presented in this thesis, newlineis to provide literatures to the blind people, through the medium of Braille newlineor speech. Therefore, researcher has designed, developed and successfully newlineimplemented Drashti-Dhvani model that contains four tools: Text newlineTransliteration Tool, Math Equation Transliteration Tool, Drawing Objects newlineTransliteration Tool, and Speaking Tool. The text transliteration tool and newlinemath equation transliteration tool transliterates text into Braille that newlineconsists of text in Gujarati, Hindi and / or English language, and newlinemathematics equation text into Braille respectively. newline
