A study on problems and prospects of women workers in coir industry in sivagangai district tamilnadu

Abstract

India accounts for more than 2/3 rds of the world production of coir and newlinecoir products. Coir industry is an employment oriented industry providing newlineemployment opportunities to the semi skilled and unskilled people in rural newlineareas Tamil Nadu is one of the leading states of India in the production of coir newlineand in providing employment to rural people especially women. Since this newlineindustry does not require huge investment, a number of small entrepreneurs are newlineentering this industry. newline This study relates to women workers in coir industry in Sivagangai newlinedistrict an agriculturally and industrially backward district of Tamil Nadu state. newlineEmployment of women in the industry is on the increase during the last twenty newlineyears. Both the central government and the state government are announcing newlinemany packages for the development of coir industries. Women in this industry newlineconstitute a sizeable number and their contribution is significant. Hence it is newlineimportant to study their problems and prospects. In the present study, an newlineattempt has been made to know their socio-economic conditions, nature of newlinework, working conditions, difficulties of women labourers in the coir industry newlinein Sivagangai district. The study relates to 2014-2015. newlineThere are 52 major coir units, 15 spinning units, 16 coir pith processing newlineunits and 21 fibre units. Traditional small scale units are around 104 providing newlinemaximum employment opportunities to women. 300 samples were selected for newlinethe study using convenient simple random sampling techniques. Both primary newlineand secondary data were used. newlineLikert s five point scale and Garrett s ranking are used to find out the newlinereason for employment, factors influencing the level of satisfaction and newlinevarious problems faced by the women workers, KS test is used to find out the newlineproblems faced by women in the coir industry. SWOT analysis is used to find newlineout the strength, weakness, opportunities and threats. newline
