dc.description.abstract | The proposed Ph.D. dissertation entitled Speech-Act Theory: Its newlineImplications in Literary Criticism and Linguistics intents to focus on speech-act newlineTheory and its implications in Literary Criticism as a new Theory and a tool in newlineLinguistics. Literary Theories and Linguistics are closely related and the Speech newlineAct Theory has significant implications in both the disciplines. Literary Criticism newlinealways believes that what is important in a work of literature is what language newlinedoes. Speech-act Theorists claim that literature is mimetic discourse in that it newlineimitates, in a verbal medium, human action. newlineSpeech-Act is a topic of sustained investigation at least in the English newlinespeaking world in the middle of the 20th century. Since that time Speech-Act newlineTheory has been influential not only within philosophy but also in linguistics, newlinepsychology, legal theory, artificial intelligence, literary theory and many other newlinescholarly disciplines. Speech-Act is a technical term in linguistics and philosophy newlineof language which performs when making an utterance. newlineChapter one is entitled as An Introductory History on English Literary newlineCriticism and Theory and exposes the significance of Literary Criticism from newlinethe origin till date with Literary Theories and their role in Literary Criticism. newlineChapter two is entitled as Speech-Act as Literary Theory brings to light the newlineinevitability of this theory in Literary Criticism and its logical link with the other newlineLiterary Theories. Chapter three is entitled as The Role of Speech-Act Theory in newlineLinguistics elaborates on the three levels of Speech-Act namely locutionary newlineAct , Illocutionary Act , and Perlocutionary Act with illustrations.
