Abstract: | The Indian Writing in English from its inception is closely connected with the newlinegrowth and development of India as a nation. There are significant writers who have newlinecontributed to the development of this Literature. Among them is Manju Kapur, a newlinevibrant Indian writer, who has voiced her thoughts in highlighting the challenges newlineconfronted by women today. newline The aim and purpose of this thesis is to study the Female Dilemma: newlineExplorations in Manju Kapur s Major Works. The researcher has included five newlinenovels, Difficult Daughters, A Married Woman, Home, The Immigrant and Custody, newlinefor the research. newline The first chapter Introduction, gives a brief introduction of Indian Writing in newlineEnglish. It also gives a brief introduction to the life and works of the Indian women newlinewriters. This chapter discusses the novels of the select writer Manju Kapur and her newlinebiography. The Second chapter, Tradition versus Modernity deals with how the newlinetraditional Indian society limits woman s individual development and growth. newlineKapur s protagonists are bold and are seen rebelling against established social newlineinequalities and life s ambivalence. The third chapter entitled Culture and Conflicts newlineportrays how Manju Kapur is a distinguished figure in the world of post-modern newlinefiction as she has successfully left an indelible mark in the portrayal of women newlinecharacters along with their culture and inner conflicts in her novels. The fourth newlinechapter, Quest for Self and Exploration of Feminine Psyche, discusses the different newlineaspects of feminist issues. The novels seem to end where they began with only a newlinechanged protagonist, who has followed the tortuous route of self examination and self newlinerealization, deciding in the end to endure the asphyxiating marital life newlineuncomplainingly. newline |
