Abstract: This thesis reports on a descriptive study that investigated the role of voluntary newlineorganizations in communicating HIV/AIDS in Tirunelveli. It also investigated the newlineKnowledge, Attitude and Practice of the residents in Tirunelveli regarding HIV/AIDS newlineprevention. The purpose of the study was to explore the communication strategies in newlineprevention and control of HIV/AIDS. Also it was to identify the current level of the newlineKnowledge, Attitude and Practice in Tirunelveli and the areas of deficit. Good health is newlineconsidered a foundation of development. HIV/AIDS (Human Immunodeficiency newlineVirus/Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome) is a severe health issue all over the world. newlineNo cure has been found for the epidemic yet. It is estimated by the Joint United Nations newlineProgramme on HIV/AIDS and the World Health Organization that the number of people newlineliving with HIV worldwide is approximately 36.7 million people at the end of 2016. India newlinehas the third largest HIV epidemic in the world. In 2016, HIV prevalence in India was an newlineestimated 0.3%. Because of their ability to more easily provide services to high-risk groups, newlinenon-governmental organizations (NGOs) and voluntary organizations will play a crucial newlinerole in any successful HIVAIDS prevention program. Since HIV is often transmitted newlinethrough behaviour deemed intimate or taboo, government health officials have a difficult newlinetime reaching the affected group. So it is very inevitable to study the role of voluntary newlineorganizations in combating HIV/AIDS. Also the lessons learned from the communication newlinestrategies used in prevention and control of HIV/AIDs by voluntary organizations is very newlinerelevant for the future health initiatives. newline
