dc.description.abstract | Cardiovascular diseases are the major health problem of advanced as well newlineas developing countries of the world. Medicinal plants are also known for their newlinecardioprotective properties and are rich sources of antioxidants. Many plants have been newlineused for cardioprotection in the tradional Indian medicinal system. Several herbs and newlineherbal products have been recommended to promote a healthy heart. To elucidate the newlinepossible positive correlation between the antioxidant and cardioprotective effects, we newlinestudied ethanolic leaf extract of Monochoria vaginalis, and Cucumis callosus. newlineThe present investigations were undertaken to identify photochemicals newlinepresent in the ethanolic leaf extracts of Cucumis callosus and Monochoria vaginalis newlineby GC MS/MS, evaluation of the in vitro antioxidant and cardioprotective activity newlineagainst DOX-induced cardiotoxicity in rats. In the Cucumis callosus extract 32 newlinecompounds were identified by GC MS/MS and in the Monochoria vaginalis extract newline16 compounds were identified by GC MS/MS. The in vitro antioxidant potential newlinelike DPPH radical scavenging activity, Reducing Power, Superoxide anion newlineScavenging activity and Nitric oxide Radical Scavenging Activity was assessed. The newlineextent of heart damage and effect of the plant extracts were assessed by various newlinebiochemical parameters like xanthine oxidase, phospholipase, phospholipid, newlineglycogen and lipid peroxidase were determined. newlineThe activities of serum marker enzymes such as AST, ALT, ALP and newlinelipid profiles such as LDL, VLDL were studied. Ethanolic extracts of Cucumis newlinecallosus and Monochoria vaginalis exhibit strong lipid peroxidation and antioxidant newlineactivity. The pretreatment with individual extracts of Cucumis callosus and newlineMonochoria vaginalis and combination of both plant extracts at two doses (250 mg/ newlinekg and 500 mg /kg) to DOX treated rats significantly prevented the altered enzymes newlinephospholipase, xanthine oxidase and lipid peroxides were enhanced following newlinedepletion of glycogen, phospholipids, ALT, AST, ALP and protein, urea, uric acid newlineand creatinine and also c | - |
