Contamination of natural water by detergents has become a matter of concern newlinein recent years because of their large scale use in home and industrial applications newlinesuch as washing powders, dye fasteners, formulation of shampoos, industrial and newlinehousehold cleansing agents, toothpaste, tooth powder, and dispersing oil spills. newlineOne of the most common domestic wastes that commonly enter the aquatic newlineecosystem is detergent. The most common active substance of detergent used is newlineLinear Alkyl benzene Sulphonate (LAS), a non-biodegradable chemical substance is newlinethe most widely used anionic surfactant in household and cleaning products. newlineFishes are very good biosensors of aquatic contaminants and as bio-indicator newlinespecies, respond with great sensitivity to changes in the aquatic environment. newlineScanning of pertinent literature reveals that detergent related works on fish are still newlinevery meager and limited to acute toxicity determination. newlineZebrafish (Danio rerio) is a model vertebrate for toxicological study and in newlinecomparable to humans. Zebrafish have also been attracted for their wide tolerance newlineassociated with genetic basis of behaviours under polluted environment.
