Abstract: Literature, one of the finest creations of the ages becomes a target point of newlinevarious studies. It is a powerful tool in the hands of artistic writers to modulate and newlinechange the social framework. The important literary genres which existed at the newlinebeginning of the civilized societies are heroic epic, stories of mystery and the newlinesupernatural, tales of adventure and heroism, folk stories, animal fables and finally newlineactual mythology - tales of the birth of the world and the human lineage and of the newlinegods and demigods. Like other national literatures, American literature was carved newlineout by the history of the country that produced it. newlineAmerican fiction became a force to reckon with because of the vital fantasy at newlinetheir core. The nineteenth century was a time of experimentation in fantasy, resulting newlinefinally in the creation of a vivid and completely American fairy tale, The Wonderful newlineWizard of Oz (1900) written by L. Frank Baum. The fantasy genre is characterized by newlinethe presence of dragons, elves, wizards, princesses and knights. Warriors and knights newlinefight against evil lords to bring peace and prosperity to the lands. The fantasy novels newlineare set either in the primary world or secondary world. The primary world is the real newlineworld where supernatural events are not supposed to happen. The secondary world is newlineset in an alternate world or dimension where the witches, dragons and other newlinesupernatural beings belong to. newlineThe principal character of the fantasy genre is the hero or antihero in some newlinecases, who is given the task of bringing balance to the world. He or she is the only one newlineable to do it, because the hero has a special ability to oppose the enemy. newline
