Abstract: Sleep deprivation SD has been shown to induce structural and molecular changes in the brain thereby resulting in impairment of learning and memory functions The present study has investigated the neuroprotective effects of Captopril on structure and functional disturbances caused due to SD in C57BL6J mice model The results of the present study revealed the beneficial effect of Captopril against spatial and recognition memory impairment caused due to SD. Treatment with Captopril has attenuated SD induced oxidative stress and neuroinflammation Captopril exhibited its beneficial effects by increasing the levels of brain derived neurotrophic factor associated with enhanced expression of synaptic markers and improved neurogenesis in sleep deprived mice The decrease in the dendritic spine density and morphological alterations in the synaptic structure as well as mitochondria in the hippocampal neurons due to SD was considerably restored by Captopril. Altogether the angiotensin converting enzyme inhibitor Captopril attenuated the SD induced impairment of the learning and memory in mice besides restoring the structural and functional disturbances in brain newline
