Abstract

One of the purposes of the Anita Desai is to show and demonstrate in her novels that many of the characters whom she describes are uprooted They have lost their moorings in their Indian Culture As a result they seem they are alienated taken away from their fundamental roots of their being There is also a possibility to examine that many of the characters seen that their life pattern needs to be reorganized along a new line The old lines of Indian Culture are no longer suitable to them or they have to be redefined in the new context Therefore the question of the relationship between characters found in Desai s novels and their relation to Indian Culture is one of complex confrontation In this context there are two lines of thinking suggested by the novelist Redefinition of Indian Culture in the new context of their experience and there can be new orientation along the line of a fresh discussion between tradition and modernity Here there is a face to face relating and conflicting tradition and modernity The purpose of the discussion may be taken along the line that new insights must be made to rediscover and redefine their relationship between Indian Culture and characters who found in a state of conflict within newline
