Abstract: In the welding industry prior to 1991 it was very challenging to newlinederive joint benefits from two dissimilar metals with diverse attractive newlineproperties This was due to the unavailability of technology to aid the newlinejoining process This limitation was overcome in 1991 with the emergence newlineof the friction stir welding FSW process that innovatively evolved from newlinethe outstanding efforts of The Welding Institute TWT located in newlineCambridge England Keeping this breakthrough in mind research on FSW newlineis evolving at an encouraging rate but many gaps exist concerning the newlinedevelopment and validation of the process for a huge array of metal alloys newlineused in welding Thus there s a requirement to examine aluminum alloy newlineunder the friction stir welding situation. With the energy saving newlinepotentials of aluminum alloys when applied in structures as a result of its newlinelight weight attribute the ability to undergo recycling the unweldable newlineattribute of some alloys including the Ak 2XXX and the 7XXX series newlinethe need for metal performance tests for these yet very useful metals is newlineessential The performance enhancement route pursued here is the FSW newlineprocess newline newline
