Abstract: | Rice is the most important food crop for 50 60% of the global population and its demand for consumption continues to grow annually (Carriger and Vallee, 2007, Stoop et al., 2009 and Mohanty, 2013). Globally rice is grown in 157.2 million hectares (Mha) area out of which India accounts for about 43.85 Mha (FAO, 2014). The environmental implications of rice ecosystem, heavy use of agrochemicals and flooded conditions could lead to substantial water use and pollution (Bouman et al., 2007 and Wang et al., 2014), high dependence on energy (Nelson et al., 2009), and considerably GHG emissions (Li et al., 2006). newlineIndia ranks first in rice acreage (43.85 Mha), second in production (104.79 million tonnes/Mt) with a productivity of 2.37 t ha-1 (Anon., 2014). Uttar Pradesh is the largest rice growing state after West Bengal in India, but the productivity lies below the national average. In Uttar Pradesh, rice is grown over an area of about 5.86 Mha with the production and productivity of 12.22 Mt and 2.08 t ha-1 respectively (Anon., 2014). newline |
