Cost Effective Decolorization of Some Textile Dyes Using Natural Adsorbents

Abstract

The research presented in the thesis dealt with the adsorption of Direct red 81 (DR81) and Rhodamine B (RHB) over Deolied seeds of Argemone mexicana L. (DAM) and Xanthium strumarium L. seed hull (XSSH). The research work initiated with screening and spectrophotometric study of textile dyes. Spectrophotometric analysis of hazardous dyes, DR81 and RHB, opted for the study determined their characteristic peaks required for adsorption studies. Maximum absorption was found at 508 and 554 nm for DR81 and RHB respectively for singular solutions. Screening of several natural materials resulted in the selection of two best natural materials, Argemone mexicana L. (AM) and Xanthium strumarium L. (XS). Adsorbents were prepared and physical analysis was carried out which showed suitability of the adsorbents, DAM and XSSH for elimination of dyes from their aqueous solutions. Point of zero charge (pHpzc) values of adsorbents threw the light on their behavior at different pH values. Electron dispersive spectroscopic (EDS) analysis displayed presence of different elements in the adsorbents which assisted in correlating the results during uptake of dyes via different adsorbents. newline
