Isolation chemical characterization and biological screening of Indian medicinal plants

Abstract

According WHO (World Health Organization), uses of medicinal plants should be encouraged, especially in countries where conventional treatment of major diseases seems insufficient. India has good biodiversity and Indian medicinal plants are used in successful management of various diseases. Recently medicinal plants are recognizing for the management of various degenerative diseases like diabetes, cardiac problems etc. Diabetes mellitus is considered as a chronic metabolic disorder of multiple etiologies, sharing common feature of hyperglycemia. Currently available drugs for T2DM include sulfonylureas, biguanides, thiazolidinediones and alpha glucosidase inhibitors have limited use in the management of T2DM due to their several adverse effects. Recently, the therapeutic regimen prefers herbal to synthetic management due to minimal side effects of medicinal plants in the pharmacotherapy of T2DM. Many Indian medicinal plants possess significant therapeutic activity against T2DM. newlineBy keeping these ideas, plan designed in this dissertation work was to isolate and characterized different phytoconstituents and to evaluate the antidiabetic activity of two Indian medicinal plants (Sesbania grandiflora and Argyreia speciosa). newlineSesbania grandiflora (SG), family Leguminosae, is a well known Indian medicinal plant used in traditional Indian medicines for various diseases. SG comprises of various phytochemical constituents. The extracts of this plant have been pharmacologically evaluated for hypolipidemic activity, wound healing activity, anti-ulcer activity, antioxidant activity, hepatoprotective activity etc. Similarly, the medicinal plant Argyreia speciosa (AS) belongs to family - Convolvulaceae is used as rasayana drug in Ayurvedic system of medicine. The extracts of this plant have been pharmacologically evaluated for antioxidant activity, hepatoprotective activity, aphordiasic activity and immunomodulatory activity etc. It has been reported that both plant have major phytoconstituents. newline newline
