Abstract: Quality teaching staff is the cornerstone of a successful educational system and for the development of quality teaching staff attention has to be paid to their QWL to ensure their job satisfaction and commitment to their organizations. It is a common belief that the satisfaction of teachers largely depends upon the quality of the people one works with, assisting colleagues at workplace, salary structure of an organization, nature of work, provision for respect and achievement. But there are some other significant dimensions of QWL such as work life balance, learning and development opportunities, career avenues and flexible working arrangements which too have an impact. It is also well established that their performance is not only a function of qualification and competence but also of motivation and better QWL. When academicians are satisfied with their quality of work life they feel more dedicated and perform their roles to their full potential, which in turn benefits the students and the society at large. Thus, the level of satisfaction of teachers towards their job is very important and it becomes imperative to pay attention to QWL of the teachers to ensure their job satisfaction and commitment to their organization. Several studies on QWL in India have attempted to focus on typical sectors like manufacturing, IT, banking, auto, steel, local government and construction sectors. However, only few studies have attempted to study teachers quality of work life in higher educational institutions in general and Jammu and Kashmir in particular. Moreover, no study is available which has attempted to determine the role of job satisfaction as mediator in the relationship between QWL and organizational commitment of university teachers. The aim of the present study therefore, was to investigate the relationship between QWL, job satisfaction and organizational commitment and to clarify the mediating effects of job satisfaction.
