dc.description.abstractThe issue of absenteeism in higher institutions is faced by virtually every country in the world. In India, its magnitude is far greater than in the western countries. The status of higher education in India is most promising and having a higher education in India is important to both the individual and the state. Maintaining the quality of higher education is totally dependent on the quality of teacher and their motivation and commitment towards profession. Absenteeism among the staff including teaching and non teaching adversely affect the quality of education. This study has been carried out (a) To analyse the causes of absenteeism among the employees of higher educational organizational in Uttarakhand.(b) To understand the organizational environment and its impact on employee absenteeism.(c) To study relationship between the factors of absenteeism and employee performance (d) To study the measures undertaken by organizations. The study has been conducted on 500 academic and non academic staff of Private Sector University, Government University, and institutes of higher educational organization. The findings of this study revealed the main reasons for absenteeism, namely factors associated with work pressure, stress, an inadequate reward system and inconsistent application of the absenteeism policy. There are many factors affecting the absenteeism among the faculty engaged with the higher education institutes. Any instituteexists as a living system is influenced by many factors. The absenteeism among the faculty and staff determines the quality of education, student s future and overall educational quality and long term institutional survival. Management needs to initiate appropriate initiative for staff motivation and bring absenteeism to a minimum threshold level. The management of higher educational institutions should pay more attention on this matter since it may result in poor academic performances and adverse impact on students and stake holders.-
