dc.description.abstract | Biotechnology is a broad discipline which exploits the biological processes, organisms, cells or cellular components in order to develop new technologies. These developed tools and products are useful in research, agriculture, industry and the clinic (Tang and Zhao 2009). It has been mainly divided in three sectors; Green biotechnology for use in agriculture, aquaculture and forestry, Red biotechnology for use in healthcare and pharmaceuticals and White biotechnology for use in industry and manufacturing. Bio economy is the sum of all three (including the relatively new field of Synthetic Biology) which is responsible to improve health outcomes, boost the productivity of agriculture and industrial processes, and enhance environmental sustainability (Fig 1.1) (Sustainable Returns, Biotechnology reports, 2013). newline | |
