Seborrhoeic dermatitis (SD) is a widespread, persistent, recurring skin disease that affects the seborrhoeic regions of the body such as the scalp, face (eyebrows, ears and nasolabial folds), and the upper part of the trunk (presternal/chest area). Few SD patients may also present with inflamed erythematous folliculitis (probably caused by Malassezia) and blepharitis. Regardless of its enormous frequency, its pathogenesis still remains controversial. newlineThe debate extends to its taxonomy in the range of cutaneous diseases, having been newlinecategorized as a type of dermatitis, or a fungal disease, or as a disease closely linked to psoriasis. Consequently, treatments differ, ranging from topical anti-fungals to topical corticosteroids as well as antimicrobial peptides. Investigation in the pathogenesis newlinemechanisms underlying the development of SD will throw light on its aetiology and may possibly open a way for the use of optimal etiologic therapies. newline
