Abstract: Development is multidimensional process; it includes social, newlineeconomic, political and ecological aspect of the society. Development of newlineTransport network is considered as an essential condition for the socioeconomic development of the country or any region. Transport is newlineconsidered as backbone of the economy of any country. Technological newlinerevolution in the field of transport has revolutionised the transport world. newlineRailway as a mean of transport played an important role in the socioeconomic newlinedevelopment of the country. In India, railway contribute to the newlineeconomic and social development of the society by enhancing employment, newlineindustries, tourism, trade, pilgrimage and by dissolving various land newlinelocked barriers through increased connectivity and accessibility. The State newlineof Jammu and Kashmir is known as Paradise on the earth endowed with newlinenatural beauty. The socio- economic scenario of the State is in situation of newlinebackwardness due to various reasons like conflict, illiteracy, poverty, newlineunemployment etc. The coming of the Railway as a mean of transport is newlineexpected to lead socio-economic development of the Jammu and Kashmir. newlineRailway contributes to the economic development of the State by providing newlineall weather connectivity to the state with the rest of the country. It leads to newlinecreate employment opportunities, tourism development, industrial development, increase connectivity and accessibility, cultural integration etc. Railway In short act as an agent of social and economic transformation in the Jammu and Kashmir and help the State to come out of the backwardness trap. newlineIn the backdrop of above said situation of the Jammu and Kashmir, the present study tries to explore the implications of railway on the socioeconomic scenario of Jammu and Kashmir and how this new means of transport contribute to the economic and social development of the Jammu and Kashmir. newline newline
