Abstract: This thesis is mainly concerned with the application of digital image newlineprocessing techniques for the identification of original diamonds from Cubic Zirconia newlineCZ by using affordable and commonly available hardware and software newlineThe scanner is used to acquire the images of diamonds The scanner newlinehas been used for scanning a diamond which is a three dimensional object in three newlinedifferent views namely table view pavilion view and culet view A very simple tool newlinethe elliptical marquee tool in Adobe Photoshop is used to find the girdle diameter of newlinethe gemstone and consequently the mass of the gemstone table view images have newlinebeen used Study of mass and size relationship by the use of Density Mass and newlineVolume related by the formula Density is the ratio of Mass to the Volume has been newlineused The geometric representation of the diamond pavilion view following newlineTolkowskys ideal cut proportions is used in finding the mass of the diamond newlineThe diamond images acquired are processed using the concept of newlinethresholding for identifying original diamonds from Cubic Zirconia culet view newlineimages have been used The level of thresholding is fixed to be 128 for processing all newlinethe diamond images Thresholding technique proves to be a simple but very powerful newlinetechnique and is successful in identifying original diamonds from Cubic Zirconia newlineThe edge detection sharpening and blurring techniques have been used newlineto further confirm the correctness of the diamond identification process performed newlineusing thresholding by making use of the idea that the number of edge pixels zero newlinelevel pixels in the histogram of the processed image is significantly high in the case newlineof original diamonds than Cubic Zirconia culet view images have been used This newlinedifference is due to the difference in the optical properties of original diamonds and newlineCZ newlineAn attempt was made to study the clarity characteristic of the diamond newlineby identifying the inclusions in the original diamonds by the application of a new newlinesharpness filter This new filter devised and found suitable for the present work was newlinename
