Abstract: | Central nervous system disorders are the psychological or behavioral newlinepattern that occur in an individual and are thought to cause distress or disability newlinethat is not expected as part of normal development. Central nervous system newlinedisorders are characterized by alterations in thinking; mood or behavior (or some newlinecombination thereof) associated with significant distress and impaired newlinefunctioning over an extended period of time. Drugs that influence brain function newlinehave long been essential to medical practice. Because of the importance of brain newlinein normal physiological and psychological functions, the actions of centrally newlineacting drugs are diverse. Drugs acting on CNS induce anesthesia, relieve pain newlineand fever, prevent or modify seizures, induce sleep, reduce anxiety and newlineameliorate symptoms of major mental illness. newlineCurrently, importance of natural products is being revitalized to alleviate newlinevarious health discrepancies. Phytochemicals in diet could provide protection newlineagainst several threats like free radical formation, degenerative disorders and newlinelifestyle related diseases but still role of array of active ingredients should be newlineunveiled. newlineIn today s life, stress, strain, sedentary life style, obesity, lack of physical newlinework and environmental pollution are becoming crucial factors in the genesis and newlineprogression of variety of CNS diseases and disorders ranging from depression, newlinemania, anxiety, psychosis, epileptic seizures, dementia, Parkinson s and newlineAlzheimer s diseases. Various neurotransmitters play important role in brain newlinefunctions. Serotonin and noradrenaline influence mental behavior patterns. newlineDopamine is involved in movements while acetylcholine in memory and newlinelearning. These substances are fundamental to normal brain functions. For this newlinereason they have been center of neuroscientific study for many years. In the newlineprocess of the study, new understanding has been gained of the neurochemistry newlineof several important mental health disorders, especially schizophrenia, newlinedepression, anxiety as well as epilepsy. newlineDespite several advances |
