Abstract: This paper intends to analyze the working prospects of cooperative newlinesector in Salem under the free market conditions It is now newlineincreasingly recognized that the co operative system in India has the newlinecapacity and potentiality to neutralize the adverse effects emerging newlinefrom the process of globalization After economic liberalization under newlinethe new economic environment co operatives at all levels are making newlineefforts to reorient their functions according to the market demands newlineThe failure of the public sector in several cases is a worrisome trend newlinePrivatization has also failed to make an impact in the rural areas newlineTherefore there is great hope on the co operative sector The paper newlineexamines the causes of slow progress and highlights the emerging role newlineand consumer awareness deposit mobilisation lending operations newlineperforming assets and overdues or NPA and employees performance newlinein primary agricultural co operative banks In comparison to the stepmotherly newlinetreatment of the past co operatives are now considered an newlineimportant plank of development The government is committed to cooperative newlinedevelopment The co operatives have inherent advantages in newlinetackling the problems of poverty alleviation food security and newlineemployment generation Co operatives are also considered to have newlineimmense potential to deliver goods and services in areas where both newlinethe state and the private sector have failed newlineThe paper focuses on the role of PACB in mobilizing adequate newlineresources and their utilization and their credit operation in diversified newlineproductive purposes It suggests evolving effective strategies for newlineovercoming the existing weaknesses and for ensuring the continued newlinegrowth of the PACBs in Salem District
