Abstract: newline Background and Objective: newline newlineABSTRACT newline newlineEnvironmental pollution is a major global problem due to the use of chemicals newlineparticularly heavy metals. Heavy metals are non-biodegradable and toxic at lower newlineconcentration. The aim of the study was to investigate the effect of Black Tea newlineExtract(BTE) against cadmium chloride induced hepatotoxicity in diabetic and non- newlinediabetic rats. newlineMethods: newline The male albino rats were divided into 2 sets with each set having 4 groups. newline In the first newline newlineset (non-diabetic rats), Group-I-Control; Group-II- exposed to cadmium newlinechloride (1mg/kg B.WT, I.P for 21 days); Group-III- treated with 2.5% of aqueous newlineblack tea extract(BTE); Group-IV- treated with cadmium chloride and BTE newlinesimultaneously. newlineSecond set Group V exposed to streptozotocin (STZ) (Control); Group VI- newlineexposed to STZ+CdCl newlineSTZ +CdCl newline2 newline2 newline; Group VII- treated with STZ+ BTE; Group VIII- treated with newline+BTE.Diabetes mellitus was induced by injecting streptozotocin. newlineThe body weights of all animals were recorded on the 1 newlineXXI newlinest newline day of the CdCl newlineexposure and on the day of sacrifice. All the parameters including hematological, lipid newlineprofile, serum and liver transaminase, blood glucose, oral glucose tolerance test newline(OGTT), oxidative stress parameters like MDA, NO, enzymatic and non-enzymatic newlineanti-oxidants and histopathology of liver were evaluated. newlineResults: newline Cadmium chloride exposure in diabetic and non-diabetic rats caused a newlinesignificant decrease in their final body weight, body weight percentage, serum and newlineliver proteins, HDL cholesterol, enzymatic and non-enzymatic antioxidant newline2 newlineconcentrations. It also caused significant increase in TC, TGL, LDL, VLDL, serum newlineand liver transaminases, platelet count and fasting blood glucose. Additionally there newlinewas impaired glucose tolerance, altered hematological parameters and cadmium newlineintoxication produced various pathological changes in liver of both groups. newlineSimultaneous treatment with BTE showed significant improvement of these values in newlineboth groups. newlineConclusion:
