Abstract: | In few decades Transport layer protocols use a single path communication to transmit data between numerous applications However single path transport layer protocols are not capable enough to keep up with increasingly growing traffic as well as an appropriate reliability Moreover single path communication is not able to offer the significant fault tolerance demands to multiple resource constraint applications results in degrading the quality of service and quality of experience QoE concerning users In recent years multi streaming and multihoming are gaining more research attention in Internet Protocol networks The reason behind the popularity of these mentioned technologies is the rapid advancement in devices that supports numerous integrated communication technologies Additionally the multipath communication technology has led to increasing the networks reliability resilience and performance Furthermore online realtime applications such as online gaming videoconferencing realtime live video streaming eg Live Sports Streaming and video streaming eg YouTube posses new challenges concerning resource constraints that led to an encouragement of routing through multiple paths In recent years Internet Engineering Task Force IETF standardizes two multipath protocols one is Stream Control Transport protocol SCTP and other is Multipath Transmission Control Protocol MPTCP Multipath Transport Protocol has been designed to offer more flexibility reliability fault tolerance and bandwidth aggregation newlineHowever as the communication technology shifts from single to multipath communication despite the abovementioned numerous advantages there are many of the challenges remains with the technology In general data scheduling over the multipath eg on what basis stripping of flows scheduled over multiple available paths are the problems associated with the multipath communication technology newline Apart from these challenges some other issues such as Fairness equal distribution of resources |
