Abstract: The present research study is a comparative study of two regional writers of which one is worldly recognized due to transcreation of Gitanjali which makes him Nobel Laureate and other is world s best story writer but limited to Marathi Literature though he nonetheless is inferior to his contemporary world recognized Nobel Laureate. The comparative study of selected short stories of Rabindranath Tagore and Sane Guruji is based on analysis of portrayal of woman character, religious and moral teaching in the selected short stories. The present research work is divided in seven chapters. Chapter-wise summary is as follow; newlineChapter I - Introduction: newlineThis chapter is divided into five parts. The first part comprises a brief survey of the historical development of the short stories in India, including Indian short stories and a brief survey of the short stories in Marathi as well as Bengali. The second part describes the concepts; Indian Womanhood, Religious Aspect and Moral Aspects. In the third part, the research outline is presented. The fourth part describes the biographical sketch of Rabindranath Tagore and fifth part deals with biographical sketch of Sane Guruji. newlineChapter II - Portrayal of Woman in the Short Stories of Rabindranath Tagore newlineThis chapter is a detailed analysis of Rabindranath Tagore s short story under study, made on the basis of the theme, women characters in the context of tradition patriarchal society. The women characters of Rabindranath Tagore are broadly discussed into two major divisions such as traditional woman and modern woman. Tagore s traditional woman characters such as Surabala, Kumo, Gouri and Nirupama are discussed in the context of Indian culture and patriarchal values. Rabindranath Tagore indirectly states the message through his women characters such as Sohini, Sasikala and Devottee that quest for modernity remains unfulfilled.
