A surfactant is a chemical substance and with their constituent groups can be able to modify the interfacial properties of a system by changing the interfacial tension. Surfactant has two dissimilar structural newlineterminal groups in the same molecule. The first one being water soluble and the other one as water insoluble. The composition, solubility properties, location and relative sizes of these dissimilar groups in newlinerelation to the overall molecular configuration determine the surface newlineactivity of the surfactant. The water soluble moiety is referred as hydrophilic moiety and the insoluble as hydrophobic moiety. newlineSurfactants are classified on the basis of hydrophilic groups into four categories as anionic, cationic, nonionic and amphoteric. newlineen_US
