Background newlineand#12288;and#12288;and#12288;and#12288;The fast rate of urbanization related unhealthy practices contributing to the upsurge of diabetes. Both the large diabetic population as well the lack of knowledge in self-managing the disease.India accounts for nearly one third of global diabetic population. Educational intervention which is recognised as a major weapon against diabetes in developing countries faces many hurdles for its effective outcome in a vast country such as India. Hence developed a modular, custom-designed, coherent multimedia -based video (Tool) in the regional language Tamil and evaluated its efficacy, specially developed addressing low literacy, rural target population for its efficacy in self management and prevention of complications. newlineMethods and findings newlineTotally 826 patients completed the entire period of study. Through RCT both groups with baseline characteristics of similar indicate that they were well matched (and#119875; gt 0.05). Nearly half (49.3%) of the patients were illiterate and one fourth (nearly 25%) had completed elementary education. Thus overall 75% of the study subjects are of low literacy patients. Majority of the study samples (35%) were on daily wages. Nearly 25% were unemployed. Rural (60%) and semi urban (25%) domiciles accounted for nearly 85% of the subjects. The results reveal a mean reduction of 1.2% in HbA1c, after receiving the video-based educational intervention. The primary outcome is improved glycemic control. newlineConclusions newlineEffective intervention which can help the patients to self mange the disease with good metabolic control and reduced complications thereby it favors to bring down the high economic burden. This work has made one such attempt and evaluates tool for diabetic self management education. newline newline newline
