Agent Based Modeling and Experimental Studies on a Third Generation Closed Cycle for Improved Biogas Production

Abstract

The main objective of this thesis was to develop a closed loop for biological wastewater newlinetreatment system of AD slurry that could be utilized for algal growth and simultaneously newlineproduce the renewable energy in the form of biomethane and remove polluting nutrients as newlinewell as reduce the greenhouse gases. The integration of microalgae growth with anaerobic newlinedigestion could significantly improve the economics and energy balance of biofuels produc- newlinetion. Nutrient removal, in particular nitrogen and phosphorus; and COD reduction from newlinewastewater is a developing regulatory need and the use of algae cultivation could create newlinea unique integration between waste treatment and biofuel production. Both the quanti- newlinetative and qualitative aspect of the mass (substrate and biomass) and biogas production newlinewas studied and modelled. newline
