Abstract: The thesis presents an account of harnessing computer capabilities in conjunction with newlinevirtual instrumentation software for sodar technology development (Gera et al., 201Ia) newlineand environmental applications with special reference to air quality considerations and a newlinepotential new application for detection of earthquake precursors. (Gera at al., 201 Ib). newlineIn view of the air quality concern of Delhi, the national capital city of India, air pollution newlinemeteorological aspects of the atmospheric boundary layer (ABL) over Delhi has been newlinestudied (Gera et al., 2013b) in terms of diurnal/seasonal variations in the occurrence newlinecharacteristics of inversion/mixing height, fumigation period etc. during normal fair newlineweather and winter fog conditions (Gera ct al., 2013a). The studies arc basal on the newlineanalysis of decade long (2001-2010) soder data collected at the National Physical newlineLebo newlineratory (NPL), New Delhi. newlineIn pursuit of the same, existing sodar technology at NPL (Singel and Gera, 1993) has newlinebeen newlineredeveloped involving innovations of virtual instrumentation based on LabView newlineplatform in conjunction with computer capabilities of sound card thereby improving the newlinedata processing technique for handling the ambient noise (Gera et al., 2011a). The work newlinehas delivered an internationally competent, remotely configurable, most economical, newlinetrouble free, user friendly, new generation mono-static soder technology that is newlinecompatible to any standard window basal PC. The introduction of a new concept of noise newlinemanagement technique, in data processing, has revealed merits of increased probing newlinerange with the same transmit power and dig out the weak signals buried under the noise newline(Gera et al., 2011a). The developed sodar has been successfully used in the present work. newline
