Abstract: | The exponential growth of Internet, Internet-related services and technological advances have made their way into the daily lives of people. The web has become an important resource for conducting business, sharing information and communication. The objective of the web is to provide a cross-platform and device-independent method to exchange documents and information. Large numbers of new websites are hosted every day with similar content but varying degree of quality. Internet users face problems in accessing websites if they lack quality features such as usability, navigability, accessibility and reliability. Therefore, it is important to evaluate and improve the quality of websites. This research provides web measurement studies on various quality attributes like navigability, accessibility, and usability to identify the issues associated with the quality attribute which can be resolved in order to enhance the quality of the websites. newlineWeb accessibility refers to making websites usable for all people, including people with special needs, regardless of what browsing technology they are using. People with disabilities are not able to access much of the important information available on the websites due to their inaccessibility. In this research, accessibility is evaluated for desktop as well as mobile devices. Web site accessibility evaluations are carried on the basis of the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines 1.0 (WCAG 1.0) and Web Content Accessibility Guidelines 2.0 (WCAG 2.0) which are universally accepted guidelines for website accessibility evaluation. Two case studies from banking and health care websites have been selected to evaluate the accessibility. In the first case study, 48 banking websites in India were evaluated. The banking websites were chosen for analysis as it allows people with abilities and disabilities to be independent and more in control of their own financial requirements. To further assess the reasons for accessibility barriers, complexity score was calculated. |
