Abstract: Mobile communication revolution has changed the lifestyle and basic working culture of the newlinehuman race over the last couple of decades. It is predicted that by 2020 there will be more newlinethan 50 billion mobile connections worldwide. Mobile communication however, has some newlineinherent restrictions and drawbacks associated with it. The major restrictions are newlineunsatisfactory quality of satellite signals received on mobile handsets, effects of natural newlinephenomenon on mobile signals, requirement of uninterrupted power supply to the newlinecommunication infrastructure and associated health hazards due to RF radiations. Another newlinepoint of concern is the increased carbon footprint in the atmosphere resulting from burning of newlinefuel by the diesel generators used to run terrestrial infrastructure. Presently, in India there is newlinecongestion of mobile services in urban areas and almost no services in thousands of villages. newlineIn this thesis, an attempt is made to address the above mentioned issues and propose solutions newlineby adopting and implementing various technologies. newlineSatellite based telecommunication services need to be made an integral part of regular newlinemobile services to improve the quality and coverage of mobile phones. Currently, the newlinesatellite frequencies in use for various communication facilities are L, S, C, Ku and Ka-bands. newlineThe L-band frequency ranges from 1 to 2 GHz and has the least attenuation, so L band is newlinemost suitable for mobile phone services. In this research, L- band studies from AsiaStar newlinesatellite are done in both static and mobile conditions to assist in designing an ideal Mobile newlineUser Link (MUL). Using STK 9.2.3 software, an Absorption model has been designed. The newlineresults of this model when compared with the experimental results match and thereby confirm newlinethe Satellite Link design. Further, the attenuation of signals inside buildings and the shadow loss due to multistoried buildings is studied by using signals from a simulated satellite newlinepositioned on a high rise building...
