Title: Effectiveness of Secondary Teacher Education Programme An Evaluative Study from the Perspective of Different Stakeholders

Abstract: Quality in education is no more a privilege but has assumed the form of a newlineright. For ensuring assure quality in school education, the first step could be providing newlinecompetent, knowledgeable, skilled and dedicated teachers to the children. The onus of newlinepreparing such teachers lies on the teacher education programmes. Thus it becomes newlineimperative to have good quality teacher education programmes. Effectiveness of newlineteacher education programmes would thus lead towards quality education at school newlinelevel. Teacher education does not exist in a cocoon; it is influenced and it influences a newlinenumber of stakeholders of the whole education system or community at large. It thus newlinebecomes essential to appreciate the perspective of different stakeholders about the newlineeffectiveness of secondary teacher education programmes. newlineThis study was planned primarily to study the status of resources, existing newlineconditions and working of teacher education institutions; and to describe the newlineperspective of teacher educators/ principals of colleges of education/ in-service newlineteachers and school principals of effectiveness of secondary teacher education newlineprogramme in preparing potential teachers. The sample of the study was limited to 50 newlinecolleges of education, 150 teacher educators, 50 principals of colleges of education, newline150 in-service teachers and 50 school principals. Both quantitative and qualitative newlinetools were used for the study institution survey checklist (for colleges of education), newlinerating scales (for teacher educators, principals of colleges of education, in-service newlineteachers and school principals) and interview schedules (on 1/3rd of the sample). newlineThe findings of the study indicate insufficient infrastructural and instructional newlinefacilities; inadequate human resources; limited facilities for student support and newlineprogression; and constricted efforts for quality enhancement initiatives...
