Abstract

The doctoral thesis Postcolonial Concerns and the Historical newlineImagination in the novels of Amitav Ghosh, aims to examine Ghosh s newlineuse of history and Postcolonialism with special attention to his fictional newlineworks. Ghosh s projection of history and postcolonial concern is viewed newlinefrom two ways: Ghosh s unconventional reading of the past and his newlinepreference to understand history from the perspectives of the undocumented newlinehistory. History as an indispensable reality is an integral quality that defines his newlinenovels. The research work would make use of primary and secondary sources newlineon Amitav Ghosh s works of fiction. newlineThe thesis has been organised into six chapters: newlineChapter I, Introduction, discusses the perspectives of postcolonialism, newlineassumptions, mode of exploration, and the ideology of the author. It also newlinejustifies the title of the thesis and its relevance in the present literary scenario. newlineThis chapter also portrays the role played by the author in highlighting the newlineunity of history and postcolonial concerns by analysing the cultural, social and newlinepolitical framework of the historical and fictional characters in his fiction, and newlinethe way in which Amitav Ghosh depicts the facts and stories in his novels newlinewithin his narrative framework. newline
