Abstract: | Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is the general term used to describe two different chronic nonspecific disorders of the gastrointestinal tract i.e., ulcerative colitis (UC) and Crohn s disease (CD). The aim of the present study was to evaluate protective effect of methanolic leaf extract of Chromolaena odorata on chemically induced IBD animal models by different biochemical tests. Rats were randomized into five groups each containing six rats. Rats were administered 250 and 500 mg/kg C.odorata once daily for four days before IBD induction by indomethacin, 4% acetic acid (AA) and dextran sodium sulphate. Animals were scarified and the all the intestinal tissues were dissected. In colon tissues, levels of GSH, SOD, CAT, GPX, LPX and Vit C were estimated. Myeloperoxidase assay was carried out to quantify the inflammation in the colon tissues. Histopathological analysis was also carried to study the pathological alterations in the colon tissues. This study concluded that use of C.odorata methanolic leaf extract could be helpful in preventing the relapse of inflammatory bowel disease due to their possible antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects. newline |
