Abstract: Diabetes mellitus is a non- communicable disease with rising prevalence across the world particularly in developing countries. Lifestyle related factors play a crucial role in development of diabetes. Oxidative stress is currently suggested as mechanism underlying diabetes and diabetic complications. Chronic hyperglycemia may result in increased oxidative stress by increasing generation of free radicals that can weaken antioxidant enzyme defense mechanism in diabetes mellitus. Increased oxidative stress is also suggested to be playing a key role in development of newlinemicro complication of diabetes. The present study has assessed the lifestyle factors, dietary pattern and antioxidant status of type 2 diabetes mellitus subjects in two stages.Patients attending outdoor clinic of endocrinology dept of a municipal Hospital, Mumbai were screened and 304 subjects were enrolled for 1st stage, following redetermined inclusion exclusion criteria. Patient s diabetes related history, anthropometric parameters, medical and dietary compliance, diet history, current dietary antioxidant intake, physical activity; present diabetes distress levels were assessed. In the present study, patients, being from municipal hospital, higher proportion of them belonged newlineto upper lower and lower middle class. Family history of diabetes was noted in 52.3%, out of which 50.9% subject s mother was diabetic. Central obesity indicated by waist circumference was higher across gender. Low physical activity was present in 79.6% subjects and only 40.7% did structured physical activity indicating overall sedentary lifestyle.
