Abstract: Concrete is the most widely used construction material because of newlineits speciality of being cast in any desirable shape, its remarkable qualities of newlineresilience, flexibility and ability to redistribute stress. In spite of these, it has a newlineserious deficiency. Plain concrete is weak in tension and has limited ductility. newlineTo overcome this, it is reinforced with steel bars which take up the tensile newlinestresses and impart ductility to concrete. Again the problem with steel newlinereinforcements is that they are likely to get corroded in due course of time newlineparticularly in aggressive and marine environments. newline Corrosion of steel reinforcement embedded in concrete is the most newlinepressing concerns for structural concrete durability. The depassivation of steel newlinewith reduction in concrete alkalinity causes an increase in the volume of newlineoxidized compounds resulting in tensile forces leading to cracks in concrete newlinearound the steel reinforcement and further accentuates the effect of the newlinecorrosive environment. newlineThough a number of remedies have been suggested to alleviate newlinecorrosion problems both during design and construction, I.S. code also newlinespecify the use of variety of supplementary cementitious materials and one newlinesuch is fly ash. It is a siliceous material obtained from thermal power stations newlineas a byproduct and it has refocused and rekindled the interests of scientists newlineand construction engineers for its very many advantages. In the present study, as the first phase of work it was proposed to newlineblend normal cement concrete with various percentages of fly ash by partially newlinereplacing the cement content accordingly and study the various mechanical, newlinemicro structural and in particular the durability properties to arrive at the newlineoptimum content of fly ash that would enhance the strengths and at the same newlinetime the durability also. Locally available fly ash from the nearby Mettur Thermal Power newlinePlant was utilized for the study.
