The aluminium based metal matrix composites MMCs are known newlinefor their better mechanical properties and particularly those with ceramic newlinereinforcements exhibit an isotropic mechanical behaviour offering the newlineadvantage of being processed by conventional secondary routes The role of newlinewelding is important in component manufacturing and increased industrial newlineapplications of these MMCs create an urge to explore their welding newlinecharacteristics However one of the main limitations in the use of these newlinematerials is concerns about the joining Unnecessary microstructural changes newlineincluding grain boundary corrosion and wider heat affected zone HAZ are newlineobserved during the fusion welding of MMCs Further the ceramic newlinereinforcement phase is found to produce an undesired matrixreinforcement newlinereaction These undesirable changes tend to degrade the mechanical newlineproperties of the joints However the solid state welding processes have newlinewidened the scope of joining MMCs newline newline
