Abstract: | Power Quality (PQ) monitoring is the process of gathering, analyzing newlineand interpreting raw measurements data into useful information. The process of newlineanalysis and interpretation has been traditionally performed manually, but newlinerecent advances in signal processing and artificial intelligence fields have made newlineit possible to design and implement intelligent systems to automatically analyze newlineand interpret raw data into useful information with minimum human newlineintervention. To detect, solve and mitigate the PQ problem, PQ monitoring has newlineto be performed. Traditional electric PQ monitoring system is typically realized newlinethrough wired communication. However, the wired monitoring systems require newlineexpensive communication cables to be installed and regularly maintained and newlinethey are not widely implemented today because of their high cost. Hence there newlineis a need for cost effective wireless monitoring of PQ. Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs) provide a feasible and cost newlineeffective sensing and communication solution for remote system monitoring newlinelike PQ monitoring of Electrical Distribution System (EDS). Efficient newlinemonitoring systems constructed by large scale deployment of smart sensor newlinenodes can provide complete information on the PQ disturbances of system newlinecomponents, including generation units, transformers, transmission lines, newlinemotors etc., by communicating with each other. While the radio communication newlineis a major enabling technology in WSN, the necessity of battery to energize the node is also the cause of one of the most prominent concerns of limited energy. newlineLimited energy considerations and the constraints in the WSN operations newlinedemand further research in network design, and for this reason effective usage newlineof energy is the underlying scope of this research work. Two classes of nodes are configured with different functionalities for newlinebuilding heterogeneous network to monitor PQ disturbances in an energy newlineefficient manner. The battery energy consumption of the sensor node includes newlinethe components such as controllers, radio, memory and sensors. |
