Mobile Ad Hoc networks (MANET) is a set of wireless mobile nodes that do not newlinerequire a pre-established infrastructure. MANET consists of autonomous nodes that newlinecollaborate for transporting information without specific user administration or newlineconfiguration such that each node in the network is responsible to provide services to newlineother nodes. Usually, each node in the network acts both as a router and an end newlinesystem at the same time. newlineIn MANET, mobility of nodes causes frequent unpredictable topological changes. newlineThis dynamic change of network topology is a key challenge that MANET routing newlineprotocols must overcome. Researchers have proposed several position based routing newlineprotocols have been proposed that deal with the mobility problem. However the newlineefficiency and scalability of position based routing protocols for MANET depends on newlinethe availability of efficient location update schemes or location services. In the newlineliterature, Home agent, Quorum based, Doubling Circles, and grid Location Service newlineupdate schemes have been proposed, but they have neither been analytically nor newlineexperimentally tested for common network· context. Further, they have also not been newlineinvestigated in detail so that improvement can be envisaged. newlineThe present thesis focuses on comparative study and experimentation of popular newlinelocation update schemes in the literature Home agent, Quorum based, Doubling newlineCircles, and grid Location Service update schemes, and proposing necessary newlinemodifications in these location update schemes for efficient routing. Further, a newlinemathematical model has been developed for some location update schemes using newlineMarkov chain to compare these location update schemes analytically. newlineFrom the experimental results, it is found that for both connectivity and density based newlineapproaches: none of the existing location update schemes perform better with respect newlineto the other location update schemes for all the evaluation metrics considered in the newlinestudy. However, the modified location update schemes perform better for metrics used newlinethan their respective orien_US
