Abstract: | A systematic development and optimum utilization of power newlinetransmission infrastructure is needed for the efficient delivery of power to the newlineload centre from the generating stations. The development of new power newlinetransmission network faces limitations of environmental aspects and high capital newlineinvestment requirements. Further, the restructured power industry warrants a newlinemore optimal and profitable operation of the power system. To overcome the newlinelimitations and to achieve optimal operation, power system planners are newlineexploring the opportunities for increasing the transmission capability along the newlineexisting routes and optimally utilize the existing transmission infrastructure newlinethrough upgradations. newlineFlexible AC Transmission System (FACTS) controllers are the right choice for increasing the utilization of transmission line to the thermal newlinelimit by modifying the line reactance and for improving the voltage profile by newlineproviding or absorbing reactive power. However, the flexibility in increasing newlinethe line capacity to the thermal limit and improvisation of voltage profile newlinedepends on the location of FACTS controllers in the network and the newlineoptimum size selection of the FACTS controllers. newlineThyristor Controlled Series Compensators (TCSC), Static Var newlineCompensators (SVC), Static Synchronous Series Compensators (SSSC), newlineThyristor Controlled Phase Angle Regulator (TCPAR), Static Synchronous newlineCompensator (STATCOM), Unified Power Flow Controller (UPFC) and Interline Power Flow Controllers (IPFC) are some of the FACTS controllers newlinewidely used in practice. newlineIn power system network, the line overloads can be eliminated or newlinealleviated using TCSC. This would re-route the power flow by modifying the newlinereactance of the network thereby avoiding the overload in the system and newlineincreasing the utilization in other parts of the system. However, the newlineoverloading of lines frequently in reality is to be determined accurately in newlineorder to modify the reactance of the line by optimally placing the TCSCs. |
