Abstract

This thesis attempts to study The image of woman in the works of newlineselected Indian women poets of the postindependence era newlineThe thesis analyses the image of Indian woman presented in the newlinepoetry of Kamala Das Gauri Daspande Eunice De Souza and Lakshmi newlineKannan who were poets belonging to the post independence era These poets newlineemerged immediately after the colonial period and their poetry played a newlinesignificant role in highlighting the image of women who were subordinated newlineby their own men who were oppressed by injustice and crimes perpetrated on newlinethem like female infanticide dowry deaths sati devadasi system child newlinemarriage denial of education sexual harassment and various kinds of newlineinequalities that prevailed The image presented is a holistic image of all newlinewomen in India irrespective of caste creed or religion in the postcolonial newlineperiod The poets construct a pan Indian image of the Indian woman in the newlinepostcolonial period to show a continuous evolution of the woman from the newlinedocile to the selfrealised woman newline newline
