Abstract: | Corporate social responsibility (CSR) is a means of analyzing the interdependent newlinerelationships that exist between businesses and economic systems, and the newlinecommunities within which they are based. The notion of firms looking beyond profits newlineto their role in society is generally termed Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR). The newlineWorld Business Council for Sustainable Development (WBCSD) defines, CSR is the newlinecontinuing commitment by business to behave ethically and contribute to economic newlinedevelopment while improving the quality of life of the workforce and their families as newlinewell as of the local community and society at large. newlineMany researchers examined this topic as a broad area that encompasses newlineseveral defined sub-areas (Carroll, 1979; Heath and Ryan, 1989). CSR also has been newlinedefined as an obligation to pursue those policies, to make those decisions, or to follow newlinethose lines of action that are desirable in terms of the objectives and values of our newlinesociety. Many other researchers have contributed to the development of the concept newlineby following it (Marrewijk, 2003, Vidal and Kozak 2008). Firms may have diverse newlinemotivations which influence the decision to implement CSR. Therefore CSR newlineapproaches also vary from firm to firm. newlineAn attempt is made in the present study to measure CSR of selected firms in newlineMysore. The objectives of the study are, to review and develop model for evaluating newlineCSR initiatives, to review CSR initiatives in India, mapping the CSR initiatives of newlineindustries in India and in Mysore District, to analyze the differences between large, newlinemedium and small firms in CSR activities and to analyze the differences between newlinepublic, private and partnership firms in CSR activities. newlinePresent study is based on both secondary and primary data.
