Abstract: Mobile Ad hoc Networks (MANETs) demands stringent performance requirements in recent years due to the increased use of streaming multimedia applications. To meet these requirements, the existing routing protocols should provide data transfer with minimal delay, packet loss and jitter in a bandwidth restricted environment. Simulation was carried out in pre-defined and random network topologies under varying mobility and workloads to completely assess the applicability of the modified DSR for streaming multimedia applications. In random mobility scenario, the influence of multi-path routing is more significant than workload based scenarios. The original DSR resulted in average throughputs of 711, 1037 and 784 kbps for low, medium and high mobility, respectively. The modified DSR showed reduced average end-to-end delay. The delay varies between 233 - 269 ms for different mobility scenarios of original DSR. In random workload scenarios, the throughput was lower for modified DSR indicating the inferior performance. This renders the multi-path routing a nonoptimum one for workloads beyond 10 CBR traffic. The overall evaluation of network performance indicated the excellent performance of modified DSR. The average throughput was improved by 3.78 % and PDF by 6.94%. The jitter is marginally reduced by 0.34%.The average end-to-end delay was reduced by 27.61%. The exceptional improvement achieved among all performance indicators is % packet loss which was reduced by 58.18%. The performance improvement achieved in the present investigation by adapting congestion-aware multi-path DSR protocol clearly indicates its potential to replace the original DSR protocol for streaming multimedia applications in MANET. The combination of congestion monitoring and multi-path execution phase enables the network to manage the scarce resources optimally. The least improvement in the performance achieved by the modified DSR in certain workload scenarios suggest that the protocol s capability to distribute the load limits to 10 CBR traff
